Are there an unlimited number of notes that can be played? eg. on a musical instrument such as a guitar.

I wouldn't use the phrase "unlimited". Every instrument has a limited frequency between two notes....its low and high notes. Some electronic keyboards can actually produce notes higher and lower in frequency than a human can hear (similar to a dog whistle).
