From your description I can tell you have a Honda. These are normally high-revving engines anyway. All you did was tell the car to stay in 3rd gear instead of shift up to 4th. (I won't even get into how easy it is to notice...) As such, the engine revs slightly higher than it would in 4th gear. As long as the engine RPMs were below 5000, there should be no damage. The only real 'damage' would be your fuel economy. More revs = more fuel consumption.
