"The Thief and the Beanstalk" by P. W. Catanese A young thief, Nick, hears some strange rumors about the source of the incrdible wealth of a very old and morose man named Jack. Nick breaks into Jack's fabulous palace where he finds some oddly shaped gold. He is apprehended before he can swipe them but Jack does trick him into 'stealing' a few beans. Jack's lifelong sadness is due to his wondering about the Giant's wife, who had helped him steal the treasures but who he had abanded to her fate. Nick of course plants the beans and makes a climb. He meets the wife, who IS in dire straits and the Giants two sons, who between them are more than twice as fearsome as their father. They have been waiting for a way to get down to the land of the little people to begin a reign of terror and pillage, and Nick's bean stalk gives them a connection. I'd she book is on a level for older kids and young tweens. Catanese has also written 'The Brave Apprentice,' furthering the story of the Brave Tailor of 'Seven in One Blow' fame.
