  • The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16. http://www.mexonline.com/cinco-de-mayo.htm
  • Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's independence day. Rather, it is a celebration of the victory in a battle fought by the Mexican Army, who defeated the French. (The Battle of the Puebla) Basically, it is the pride that the Mexican people have in their country in their willingness to fight a larger and more prepared army, even though the outcome looked grim. The Mexicans hadd around 5,000 or so, with little supplies and still defeated the French in the battle. (Just so no one hassles me, I just finished learning about this in class recently, so it's just knowledge at this point-- not plagiarism)
