I'd recommend the 'complete player' books. I used them to self teach piano and pick up the basics of guitar. They have a good balance of theory and recognisable tunes, allowing you to practice songs you know early on.

yes there is also a dvd just go to your local music store you can get both for 35-40 dollars

Why don't guitars have 5 strings, or 8 strings, or 11 strings? (instead of usually 6 for regular guitars, or 4 for bass guitars)
