Too many people fear the down sides of it, and to them they think it outweighs the good. And people also look at it as foreign, wrong, and weird.

because people, especially here in the US, have been brainwashed to think that there is only one viable method of government; capitalism. While it may have a few benefits, we are never taught its negative aspects. An proponent of socialism or communism is immediately heckled, though those doing the heckling usually have no knowledge of the basic tenets of either.

Why is it so sad? Do you want socialism /communism even though you readily agree it is an abomination to freedom? That's what's sad to me.

Because socialism, and its specific version, communism are based on a lie. The lie can only be perpetuated by limiting how much people can talk about and debate it. The lie is that human beings do not have a specific nature, and thus they can be conditioned, forcibly if necessary, into behaving in a fashion that is contrary to human nature. There can not be socialism without limiting speech.
