Personal preference. One of my Therapy dogs would NEVER GO when he was on lead, he would only poop off lead. He wouldn't even tend to pee on lead, only if he couldn't hold it anymore, and this dog (big) could hold it for hours at a time...much longer than I could...lmao. With all the house training challenges that people have, those who write about them and my own clients from time to time......give THANKS that YOUR pup is happy to do it out in the garden, rather than in your house! VERY GOOD DOG!!!!!

Dogs prefer to defecate on a natural surface such as grass, rather than on a surface such as concrete. If you are on a similarly natural surface when you take him for his exercise, then you need to organise it so that you take him for his walks at the times that he will want to 'perform', rather than after he's done it in the garden After all, if you don't need to go, you don't need to go..

My dog will only poo in the dining room and won't go out side. She does use the pad that I put down, but the wlks when she poos so it all over the room. She will pee out side but that is it!

He must feel more comfortable in the garden. Strangely enough, many dogs do not poop in their own yard but only in other's yards (much to the annoyance of keen gardeners) or out on the footpath or in the park.
