Competence. No joke. The ability to fully understand most information and make a legitimate response to a legitimate question.
-
stability (and integrity if I could choose two that go hand in hand)...in their voting history and personal lives. Shows they can keep it together and gives a track record of their behavior.

The ability and willingness to be much more bi-partisan, which means WORKING WITH Congress and the Senate, to get things DONE about VITAL issues that face us such as, war, health care, social security, Homeland Security, tax reform, immigration, etc.etc. We will have ALOT to fix and tweak and turn around when 2008 comes. We need the president to forget being a member of a specific part so much and decide on what is best for the whole country, which is of course made up of the main two political parties, MANY independents, and others from smaller political groups - all citizens, all deserving reforms and non partisan voting and bill making in Washington. We have probably never had that, but it is time we figured out how to achieve it, if we want to quit wasting time and shooting ourselves in the foot. We either start making positive and forward movement or we will continue to be mired down and depressing the country and many of the people in it.

All presidents are different. Thats the idea of a term limit. Perhaps the ability to not misquote the constitution. Once those two things are taken care of the country basically runs itself. Too bad we left the constitution in the dust a long time ago. It still protects people a little but in years to come I expect nothing but infringement on my rights.

Number 1 - Courage to fight and help us protect ourselves from the radical muslims that every day swear they will kill us while fencing and closing the borders before dealing with the 12,000,000 from the last amnesty that didn't enforce the border. The President cannot bow to votes or weak tendencies that have appeared in every war we have had to fight to protect real peace from aggressors like Hitler and Iran.

they need faith
-
The judgement to pursue long term solutions, rather than pandering to reactionary or retaliative short-term actions (i.e. seeing the "Big Picture").
-
I would say humility, in the sense that he (or she) needs to be aware of the limits of American power overseas and the corrosive effects of the Inside-The-Beltway power game both domestically and overseas. One characteristic of Bush and his cronies has been a lack of humility and a belief that they can shape the world according to their wishes.
-
Vision...which kinda goes with leadership.
-

-
A connection with the people who s/he represents...instead of the corporate interests that paid for the Office.
