Lots of discussion of this on StrategyPage.com's forums. The consensus seems to be the US M-1 Abrams and the German Leopard II, with the British Challenger just a hair behind. It depends on what scenario it'll be used in, eg, is speed or protection more important. The US crews' actual experience would provide an edge in a real battle.

Technicaly the Leaopard's performance is better than the Abrams's but the British Challenger packs a better, longer, accurate punch whit the other 2 tanks, today range is a must, to engage targets at a long distance even befor the enemy can notice your presentce.

I would think the Leopard II or the M1-A2 Abrams would be considered the best tanks in the world. Which one is better among those two? Probably depends on your nationality! :) Too bad the Germans don't use their tanks for much anymore. Not that I'd want them traipsing across Europe again spreading death and destruction. But it would be nice if they could put that great tank to the better use of killing some of our mutual enemies.

They should combine the Leopard with a helicopter talk about mobility.

The new Leopard 2A6 is theoretically the best tank. It used the L55 gun which has superior range to the M1Abrams, which uses the L44. So it can shoot greater range and higher velocity.... theorically can shoot at the Abrams while the Leopard stills remains out of range. Leopard 2's are also used by a lot more countries than the Abrams, which may indicate their superiority (or their price!).

Talking with the DAT's (Dumb Ass Tankers), the only things we've seen kill an Abrams or a Challenger in combat is another Abrams or Challenger.
