  • I do, initially, just to try something new. If I like it, I will continue making it until I know it by memory. At that point, I start to make variations to the recipe, in which the result is usually what I keep, rather than the cookbook recipe.
  • Somewhat- I like to experiment on my own- but cookbooks are great learning completely new things, especially those from another country. I'm currently working on making a family cookbook, as a gift to pass down the generations- complete with pictures and stories (like a scrapbook).
  • I usally print something off the internet. I have to or my food will come out like a leather belt. Oh wait... it does anyway! People are probably thankful I don't invite them for dinner.
  • I have to. Otherwise my food comes out too spicy with something. Virtually inedible. If I do use recipies they at least are halfway decent.
  • No, because it drives me to distraction when something on the ingredients list isn't in my cupboard.
  • No I don't. I also abhor cooking shows. Wow, look at that Kitchen Troll Emeril, he's sloshed again or that ultra-irritating Rachel Ray. I'm very creative in the kitchen and there's nothing I need to know to cook the kinds of food I like that I couldn't figure out for my self. I suppose cookbooks are helpful to people who don't trust their kitchen abilities or lack culinary creativity.
  • Yes my fav is the old betty crocker one.
  • Usually no, but I do go through periods where I use them. When the family seems to be getting tired of the meals I am making, I find new and interesting things for us to try.
  • Yes because when I try to use my own seasonings it taste like crap. Cooking is not a talent I possess.
  • I rarely follow a recipe exactly, but cookbooks are fun to use to get ideas. They are also useful for trying flavor combinations and other things that I haven't done before.
  • Yes, because I can't cook.
  • Yes for ideas or learn about foods I never cooked, always end up doing it to my own taste
  • I improvise in my kitchen. Infact I could write a book on how to improvise in a kitchen.
  • I have never used a cookbook so always improvise.
  • I use mostly recipes I found on the internet. For example, from epiqurious.com.
  • I have used many cookbooks and online recipes down through the years. That's basically how I've taught myself to cook. I also watch cooking shows on TV. I have a collection of favorite recipes and I also improvise, now that I know what I'm doing. It took me a while to learn what spices go with what, how to make flaky crusts, how to bake well, techniques, etc. I now consider my cooking skills to be above average and I'm continuously working on new recipes.
  • Only when I bake..exact measurements are critical to the success of anything one bakes. When cooking everything else, I improvise relentlessly, consistently and most of the time successfully! :)
  • Both. I take the recipe and change it to my taste. I am a cooking fanatic.
  • I've never used a cookbook. Of course you don't need to have a cook book to bake a piece of chicken. LOL!
  • It really depends on what I'm doing. I use recipes for about 90% of my baking as you have to be pretty precise with that kind of stuff. For cooking, if it's something specific i'm going for, i'll use a recipe. But sometimes I just get in there and see what happens!
  • i can use a cookbook but for my everyday food where its just me and my sisters and mom, i'll improvise. =) i've never heard them complain anyways
  • I improvise. Every other month I improvise. The scrambled eggs are getting better and better with each improvisation.
  • Yes, I love to try new things and I do not have the skills to come up with them on my own.
