It was the explanation for reality most widely accepted by the earliest members of Norse culture. The Sagas have been passed down as oral tradition for generation upon generation. They preserve the cultural wisdom of that great people.

It's unknown, really, since most written records concerning it were recorded by Christians. However, it was obviously a widespread belief system. The Romans recorded sacrifices to analogous gods in their battles against Germanic tribes.
