I took swimming lessons in like third grade. But I think my dad showed me before then.

We had a pool growing up and my parents would take me into the shallow end so I could play at a young age, so I was always comfortable in the water. But at age 4 or 5 I still wouldn't let go of the sides of the pool and actually swim so they bought me some toy airplanes and told me I could have them as soon as I swam from one end of the pool to the other. That was enough for me.

I was told to try to keep my butt up in the air, kick my hands and feet.

Naturally... When I was 3 (I think) I was thrown off a dock and I swam half drowned back to land. This could have probably counted as my first time but I say my real first time was back in '93 in a pool at some hotel, South Carolina. My toy boat was pushed toward the centre of the pool (the deep end, of course) and it was beginning to sink. So naturally I swam to save it. I did drown half way back though. **Just kidding. >)
