Will grass seed sprout in an area where I had a bonfire or do I need to supplement the soil?

Yes you would have to add more soil.

Yes but, you must first "till" the soil, that means turn it. Take a shovel and turn the top soil over so that the burnt ash and other surface material are now underground. A rotatiller will also work but is for larger areas and most people have to rent these as few own one. Ash provides nutrients to the soil but it would be wise to add organic material too such as compost or mulch. Starbucks will even give you for free, used coffee grounds to add to your compost pile.
