Why is it anymore humane to use human milk than cow milk. It's not harming the cow any more than it would harm a human. This makes no sense to me!

I think PETA is loosing credibility.
Ben & Jerry's spokesman Rob Michalak said the company applauds PETA's creative approach to bring attention to an issue, but believes that a mother's milk is best used by a child.

Pardon my language, but that's fucked up.

Only PETA would agree that harvesting human breast milk is more humane that harvesting cow's milk. PETA marginalizes the small amount of actual good they do by this kind of dumb-ass bullshit.

ANYONE who supports this is a nimrod.

dead leaves raked in a pile

    Hey that's hilarious...

I can see the production facilities... acres of women whose sole job is to build up stores of milk and get milked twice a day. They can be allowed to roan freely through malls until their handlers come to round them up and take them to the milking shed.

Of course the milking female has to be fertilized to start the lactation process. That presents a unique new career opportunity for enterprising types

The big problem is the babies produced as a byproduct of starting lactation. They obviously can't be allowed to interfere with milking by consuming the milk, that would defeat the whole object of the exercise.

At present that seems to be an insurmountable problem and so the entire project will have to be shelved for the forseeable future.

This whole thing makes me LOL.

First of all, PETA wrote the letter not to Ben&Jerry's, inc., but to Ben and Jerry, who don't actually OWN Ben&Jerry's any longer. Oops.

Secondly, Ben and Jerry's response was absolutely perfect: "We believe a mother's milk is best left for her children."

Several of my Vegan friends agree that goes for the cow, as well as the human.

People for eating and torturing animals is better, lol.
However, I do believe they might have started with all good intentions, but as time has gone on, even founding members have quite both peta, and green peace. One sad point of green peace is that they acctually convinced starving african countries to denie tons of grain, because it was geneticly modified and was "poision" when it's the same stuff many stores now carry. My point is they are far to extream. If your concern is just, just don't hurt anyone getting your point across please...

I get their motive to end the use of cows' milk in their products but their campaign will not succeed. If Peta really cared about animals rather than money they would use less shock tactics and instead focus on small steps. Perhaps there are less cruel methods to obtain milk but asking to use human breast milk is ridiculous and attention seeking. Peta should know that most people scoff at their tactics even those that strongly support animal rights.

Someone posted that the taking of cows milk for humans is quote, "not harming the cows". But it is harming the cows terribly who have their precious babies taken away so that we can steal their milk. Mother and calf are deeply upset. They cry for days Cows like aLL mammels can only supply milk when pregnant and so they are continually made pregnant for us to take their calf milk. They are also selectively bred for the biggest udders to produce the biggest yield, all of this abnormal and PAINFUL for the cow. They get mastitis and so pus cells migrate to the udders and that is terribly painful. Also u are taking in some pus cells as 400 million pus cells are legally allowed in one litre of milk ,whivh is a few million per teaspoon. Cows are lame because of their forced excessive udders. U say the cow does not suffer. On what do u base your logic. All mammals produce milk which is suitable ONLY for their own kind. All mammals milk is different. All milk is baby food only and is NOT for adults. Why do u think cows milk has to be altered for humans. Milk is a leading cause of allergies and diabetes and lots of other illnesses. Why? Because it is totally abnormal to drink it from another species and into adulthood too. Being lactose intolerant is actually NORMAL as we should switch off after baby hood to milk . Only 25/27 p c of people on earth drink milk. Those that do not ,the other 75pc approx do not suffer from milk drinking diseases. Believe me dairy is a cruel business. That is the message such as pepa try to put over. but use your own logic. Countries that do not drink milk do NOT suffer from osteoporosis.

well..i love love love all animals, but quite frankly, that was just really stupid to say. what do they expect? for cows to go around without being milked? i grew up on a farm and cows just like pregnant women suffer when they have too much milk, it is painful to them. ask a pregnant women if you dont believe me. so they have to be milked, duh. and throwing away that milk would just be a waste, so why not use it on ben and jerrys ice cream?

Just sweep all opinions based on cultures, religions, and conventionality aside and you'll find that it is still nowhere even remotely as barbaric and perverse as the currently dominant practice of eating the flesh of an innocent life unwilling to die for someone's BBQ or dinner.

As long as appropriate food quality control is applied to it; from a food ingredients point of view, I see nothing wrong with it since it is after all the only milk genuinely designed for the human body. Having said that, I must admit I was not brought up with the western diet and has never has any use for dairy products in our foods, so I will not have use for it either way.

However, since such practice has never been done throughout human history, it will be seen as being too shockingly alien a concept for the mass to accept. I see a lot of flaring emotions, hate suggestions and swearings from people that came without any realistic and serious scientific criticism of it.

Thus it appears that people are outraged and shocked due only to the alien nature of it, and not because it is a practice that will be physically harmful in anyways. By harm, I doubt the women are going to be sent off to the nearest slaughterhouse once their milk production drops below a certain productivity margin. Though I might be wrong, considering the many other perversions that humans has taken for granted for thousands of years.

So what's the point of all this? Well, very simply, those that do not find the demonic devouring of innocent flesh to be utterly perverse and satanic, should not be offended by this harmless proposal. After all, no lives will be harmed in the making.

This is when the war between PETA and human rights groups get ugly.

Well, to produce enough milk from humans the most likely way is to kill all the cows that were needed to produce the milk (cause that's just a waste of resources keeping unwanted crop alive). Then replace them with geneticaly engineered humans that produce just about as much milk in essence, treating them like farm animals. Yay! Both groups loose.

    Really? Thats odd.
So its not ok to subject cows to pproducing milk, as they are uspopse to, but it is ok to forma sweatshop of women to produce breast milk (which many of them will have to get pregnant do to as well as get a pay raise and babyleave). But maybe I'm wrong. I'm avegetarian and all but I think PETA is a bit out of control. I dont have a problem as long as the cows are treated properly. If they are living in decent ocnditions and not abused, no harm done. What PETA hsould have ask is for the Ben & Jerrys Co. to try more humane treatment on the cows who profuce the milk, free-range and all that junk. While it may costm ore, you wont be putting women in the conditions animals are *forced* to live in.

Put it this way, considering that coca-cola is a great cleaning product, if we knew the real ingredients of the things we eat from fast-food places, we'd probably think twice (or at least hesitate for the slightest moment).

I think it's pretty funny... actually my husband thought my breast milk tasted pretty good. Cuz I eat the good stuff. =o)

It was probably just shock an awe to remind everyone that cow's milk is for their calves - that get taken right away and usually placed in confining crates so they can become the tender veal that so many love to eat. A lot of people aren't fans of veal, but it's closely tied in with the dairy industry.
