I know it's a good thing to do, whether you choose to have it kept in a private bank or donate it to a public one. It's a valuble source of stem cells and will probably be thrown away otherwise. Private banking can be expensive, but the pros are apparently that it can be used to treat many conditions later in life, and one cord is good for the whole family as the material of interest is genetic, not blood. Public banking is free, you just have to phone for a kit (ask your doctor for a number) and they'll do it for you in the hospital. This is used mainly for research purposes I think. I read something recently that said doctors had questioned the usefulness of privately donating, and were now saying that it was better to donate publicly as this *would* be used... plus it saves you thousands of dollars... you'd probably be best speaking to your doctor about that though.
