I have a 1997 chevy monte carlo the brak lights don't work unless i pull and hold the dimmer switch

    The brake light circuit goes from the brakes switch on the pedal to the turn signal switch handle. This is a common problem. The switch in the column will need to be replaced. It is referred to a s the "turn signal / multifuntion handle / switch"

    1997 monto carlo the brake like come on when you press the brake but stay on for while than goes out but come back on whe press the brake

    Please check fuse #39 in the fuse box. if fuse is blown replace, if it blows again unplug brake light switch mounted at lower part of steering column and replace fuse. This will tell you if the brake light swith is bad if not pull headlight switch out and unplug replace fuse and see if it blows. I just had this problem with mine and found the brake light switch was bad. Hope this helps will check posting for result.
