I have good luck by running cold water and using a fine mushroom brush, available in most kitchen accessories departments for about $3.00, and wet the brush under the running water, and brush the dry mushroom with the wet brush. This removes the dirt while keeping the mushroom white & fairly dry. tingirl

The easiest, and fastest way to clean mushrooms is to run them under cool water, rubbing them gently to remove any surface dirt.

There is a school of thought that says you should never emmerse mushrooms in water because they will absorb it and be unusable, but that theory was tested, and proven false, on Alton Browns' Foodnetwork cooking show "Good Eats".
