  • Its gets cooler the higer you go because the atmosphere is thiner. You are getting "closer" to the sun but the sun is 92955800 miles from earth. The atmospher is only ~10,000KM thick. So your not getting all that much closer to the sun.
  • Both are correct - as you go higher you do get very marginally closer to the sun, but it also gets cooler. This is because the air pressure becomes lower as altitude increases. Have a look at this link: http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/env99/env029.htm
  • As the others have said - the atmosphere thins and radiant heat from the earth dims as you go up. Of course, if you go higher up at night time, you're also heading directly AWAY from the sun. If you wind up out of the atmosphere altogether, and in the direct path of sunlight, it actually gets extremely, lethally hot without good protection.
