  • Hello this depends on whether you get married in the us or in Jamaica.Your husband will have to file an I 130 which is the petition for an alien relative, also an I 131 which is the petitionfor a travel document while your case is pending ,which is optional, also an I 485 which is application to register permanent residence or adjust status and an I 765 which is optional its the applicatoion for employment authorization, you will need this to legally work in the united states and you will also need an I 693 which is a medical examination from a uscis approved physician. You need to have your vaccinations up to date for the I 693 depending on your age and when last you were vaccinated.I am going through this process myself I am Trinidadian. If you plan to get married in Jamaica you will need to have your spouse file the paper work in Jamaica.Which will take a very long time.
  • I just got married in Jamaica to a Jamaican a few months ago. I retained an immigration attorney to do ALL of my paperwork, etc. I have read so many negative things about getting married in Jamaica and it delaying the process. Prior to our marriage I checked with the attorney and he said that was not the case - so we did. Within 30 days we have already passed phase one (of three in total). He estimates he will be here anywhere from June - December. We were married in December 07 and my attorney filed the paperwork in the US in early Feb 08 - as it took a while in JA to get the actual marriage certificate.
  • Marryig a citizen of the United States does not automaically allow you to live here. You may have a long wait ...you must apply for citizenship like anyone else wanting to move here. Start the process as soon as possible...apply to the Office of the Secretary of State for the paper work you will have to fill out to get a passport to remain here for an agreed time until you can become a citizen. Good Luck.
