Anytime you are not in the car. It is a theft deterant, because without the faceplate it is worthless to anyone, they will not want the radio, nor will they know what kind of radio it is without the faceplate. Do not put the faceplate in the glovebox or leave it in the car when not attended.

I know I should take it off but I never think about it. My husband used to take the faceplate off but I am sure I would never be able to replace it if i removed it.

I asked this question, because I just had a new car stereo installed (with HD radio), and it has the removable faceplate -- a first for me. I'm not planning to remove it at all, unless there is a very special situation. For example, if I travel for business for a couple weeks, I could pop it off & put it in the house. But for day-to-day use, I can't see constantly doing the off/on thing (unless I'm convinced otherwise here on AB). Also, the manual says "Frequent detachment will deteriorate the connectors -- to minimize this possibility, periodically wipe the connectors with a cotton swab or cloth moistened with alcohol, being careful not to damage the connectors." It sounds like daily detachment to prevent theft can actually pose some possible harm (and also - I am concerned that I could lose, drop, step on, or otherwise damage the faceplate). I've never had my car radio stolen before. I wonder how common it really is, and the stereo was only $199, so I don't think it's worth all the extra anti-theft effort.
