There are several games that are called "football", including Rugby, American football, and Association football. Association football is the game that Americans call "soccer". Association is often abbreviated as "assoc." which led to the slang term " 'soc" which became "soccer".

Just as a further clarification, it's not an American coinage, it's been known as soccer to distinguish it from other forms of football for as long as the Association Rules have existed. It's an English term, and in similar mode Rugby is often known as "rugger" in certain circles. As I mentioned in an earlier answer, in England "football" means soccer, unless specified. Many countries have their own variations and they're called "football" in each place. The game called football in America is known as "American Football" elsewhere in the world.

Americans started playing football shortly after it was invented in 1863 by the English. They played it in all their universities. However american students struggled with the technical side of football. Their coaches became frustrated. In order to save face america and Canada invented their own sports so they would have a chance of winning something and could avoid competition. Gridiron was invented and football hating became the national pastime. Most sports fans in america get their sporting identity from hating football, spending hours on forums or radio talk shows insulting footballers and their fans. Children who play football at high schools in north america are often abused by steroid induced gridiron freaks. Websites have been set up to insult football and try to prevent it from becomming americas national sport. Americans to my knowledge still play gridiron and baseball long after most people have dismissed these activites as not being real sports.
