It's not based on Linux, but it is Unix-y. Mac OS X is based on the Mach Kernel, an open-source kernel which is not used in any other major operating system. On top of that, it runs the FreeBSD services. Apple calls this "UNIX-based". In fact, it pretty much is a Unix system, even though it's not officially called that. In addition to Lucas_ answer, you can also run Unix commands and shell scripts via the "Terminal".
