I believe I have the same problem as you, not many people seem to have the problem, in fact I thought I was the only one. The picture will first get bright, then begin to darken (the white letters on the CMB or whatever that bar is called, actually become gray and much too blurry to read if they are selected) and then the dark colors or edges of things start to blend into the colors of everything else, anyone who has used the wind filter in Photoshop should know what I am talking about.
Sony actually sent for my unit, the box arrived on Thursday and I sent it in for repair. Hope to get it back soon.
Also, this seems to only happen to me after about 5-10 minutes of watching movies (DVD's or Bluerays all seemed to give the same result) or if I was playing a game for 10-20 minutes, but it actually seemed to vary. I actually took the fan off of my air hockey table and installed it next to my PS3 since I thought the thing was just overheating.
My Playstation disc drive will not work. There is nothing in the disc drive and when I try to put a disc in, It will not grap the disc.
