As unlekely of a place as it may sound, Israel is a relatively safe to hitchhike. There, it is a very common way to get around.

I have a friend tell me who use to live in Alaska that it was an Alaska state law to pick up hitchhikers due to the extreve cold weather.

I dont know if this is considered to be hitchhiking or not, however in many major metropolitan areas where HOV lanes are used (Northern Virginia in particular) total strangers park in a commuter lot and share a ride into neighboring DC. Cars line up beside the commuter lot, 3 total strangers will get into the car together and the driver happily goes down the HOV lane while everyone else sits in heavy traffic.

Iceland. Perfectly safe, acceptible mode of transport and the drivers are nice. Been doing it for years.

While in Cuba, I heard it was not only acceptable but it was against the law to pass a hitchhiker and not pick them up if you have room in your vehicle. It is the country's way of dealing with the shortage of automobiles and fuel. There are always several groups of hitchikers along the roadsides and the government even provides shelters for hitchhikers to congregate. We picked up a few times when we were there and the people were very nice.

New Zealand but I wouldn't do it if your a lone female as there has been the odd rape/murder of lone females that have been hitchhiking.

I really hate it when I see questions and no name as to who asked it. I'm an Alaskan, and YES, it is totally "accepted and considered relatively safe" to hitchhike here. NO, it is not law to pick them up. We are more independent and free to do what we wish [w/in the law] than most places. Can you honestly see someone in America trying to force a woman to pick up guys hitchhiking? Come 'on!! Having said that, I hope you are not some serial killer looking for easy victims...
