Is it advisable for women to hitchhike?

I don't know about other countries, but in the United States, it's definately not advisable for women to hitchhike. In fact, although I travel a lot, I haven't seen a woman hitchhiking for at least 10 years. The risks are simply too great. Not only that, but people seldom stop for hitchhikers these days because of the risks of doing so.

Definately not. Hitchhiking is often assoicated with prostituion which may bring forth many unwelcomed advances. She might be just looking for a ride but the guy might be looking for something else. In a worse case scenario the guy may not take "no" for an answer and the woman may end up getting more than what she bargained for.

If you pick and choose the people who pick you up carefully enough, and travel with another person, it should be fine. I do it all the time.
