    As of the censusGeographic references#2 of 2000, there were 9,543 people, 4,078 households, and 2,528 families residing in the town. The population density was 206.8/km sq (535.5/mi sq). There were 4,375 housing units at an average density of 94.8/km sq (245.5/mi sq). The racial makeup of the town was 95.98% White, 1.78% Black or Race (United States Census)African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.50% of the population.

    There were 4,078 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.1% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% were non-families. 29.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.86.


    In the town the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males.

    The median income for a household in the town was $45,822, and the median income for a family was $53,343. Males had a median income of $37,096 versus $29,850 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,153. About 5.7% of families and 7.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.9% of those under age 18 and 6.6% of those age 65 or over.
