  • As of the census of 2000, there were 2,469 people, 916 households, and 620 families residing in the town. The population density was 499.1/km sq (1,291.4/mi sq). There were 1,032 housing units at an average density of 208.6/km sq (539.8/mi sq). The racial makeup of the town was 39.77% White, 59.17% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.12% Asian, and 0.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.97% of the population. There were 916 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.7% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 28.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.15. In the town the population was spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.5 males.
