I still love to stand up, place my right hand over my heart and face the flag. I believe that it proper whenever three or more people are gathered. tingirl
While I don't consider myself to be patriotic, I still stand out of respect for the people who are. If one opposes the patriotism, or feels politically neutral, then it is OK to sit during the playing of the national anthem. They shouldn't be ridiculed for their beliefs. After all, America is based on individual beliefs. Even if those around you do not agree with you, they should still respect your right to have them.
The proper thing to do is to stand and remain standing until the National Anthem is finished.
This rule applies to all situations. If you are overseas and they break into their National Anthem, it is still appropriate to stand and honor the anthem.
You can have your objections to something that your country, or their country, may have done, but the proper thing to do is to show respect for the anthem and respect for the people. Sitting through someone's National Anthem is not proper and can be viewed as a gross insult to many people.
Show a little class and honor the anthem.
