For purposes of an invitation, it should be addressed as: Colonel & Mrs. John Smith. You do not need to add a notation that they are retired. They earned the rank and they are entitled to be acknowledged by that rank. On the return envelope, the retired individual should use the return label Colonel (ret.) and Mrs. John Smith. It is not a huge issue if they fail to use the retired notation on returned labels, just because it appears clumsy. If they have a business card or other item, it should say: Colonel John Smith United State Air Force (ret) or Colonel John Smith (ret) United State Air Force

As a retired member of the USAF I am entitled to keep my rank as I never lose it; however, I am also obligated to acknowledge my retired status and not use it in any way to bring discredit upon the service or for financial gain.
