  • If by "last week of birth control pills" you mean the placebo pills you would normally take during your menstruation, then yes, it's OK. I'm not a physician, but I asked my doctor this same question and this is what he told me. Although, he did warn that he wouldn't reccomend going for more than three months without menstruation. I also assume that women who have health problems related to the reproductive system would certainly want to consult their doctor before trying it.
  • My doctor mentioned this as a handy thing to do while traveling, but it should only be done with monophasic pills (the same hormones throughout the cycle, as against the triphasic pills which vary hormone intake over three weeks and include different coloured pills in the set) - the other sort can cause irregular bleeding. Apparently you can still get some spotting anyway while your body gets used to it. Modern pills are lower dose than the original type, and so are fairly safe. There has been some suggestion that it's unnatural for women to have as many periods as we do nowadays (ancient women would have spent most of their reproductive life pregnant or breastfeeding), and that there's no particular reason that we have to menstruate each month as the existing pills are set up. For more information, see: http://www.noperiod.com/ which is set up by Dr. Leslie Miller - Associate Professor, OBGYN, at the University of Washington.
