The motto of Portland, Oregon is , In Livable Cities is Preservation of the Wild, is a corollary to Thoreau’s aphorism, “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” Protection of the rural landscape depends on creating livable cities---cities in which water quality, access to nature, public spaces, parks, and trails are integrated with the built environment.
