According to rodeo rules, the flank strap must be lined with enough sheepskin to completely cover both flanks and the belly of the horse. It cannot have any sharp or cutting edges. The outside is made of leather.
The flank strap gives the horse an advantage by changing the way he bucks. This change makes it harder for the cowboy to stay on and makes the rodeo more interesting.
The flank strap is positioned over the belly and flanks of the horse. It is not possible to position the flank strap over the genitals of the horse, regardless of gender. Additionally, it cannot harm the kidneys of the horse because 18 ribs protect them.
Animal Rights Activists claim that the only reason the horse is bucking is because of the cruel treatment that it is receiving. They also state that the horse is in pain because of the flank strap.
The flank strap does not cause a horse to buck. Instead, if the horse is inclined to buck at all, the flank strap simply changes the way the horse bucks--straighter and higher with his hind legs.
