The population of Marmet, West Virginia was 1,693 at the 2000 census. Marmet was incorporation (municipal government)incorporated in 1921. It is named for the Marmet Coal Company, owned by William and Edwin Marmet, which began the development of large tracts of coal lands at that location in 1899. It was first named 'Elizaville', after Mrs. Leonard Morris, original settler here in 1773.
