  • It could be major mechanical problems but your saying at idle speed implies that the noise could deminish or go away at higher speeds. I have heard loose flex-plate to crankshaft bolts cause the noise you describe. Its worth a look.
  • If not the flex plate to crank bolts being loose and you saying the noise is coming from the side of the motor, I'd suspect worn connecting rod bearings. Making the noise at idle can be caused by lower oil pressure at low rpms, causing a clanking noise. As the rpms build and the oil presure increases the oil fills the clearance beteween the bearing and the crank journal, making the problem seem to go away. Also, as the engine warms up to operating temperature, the noise should deminish somewhat also, as the heat expands both surfaces, again filling the clearance between the bearings and the crank journal.
