I would recommend doing your own SEO. A professional can be expensive and it really is not THAT difficult. I prefer to have control over my own websites, also.
Get a book from the library or there are several online tutorials, blogs and groups to help you on your way.
I'd think, in the long run, you would be better off saving the cash AND learning a bit about how your site works and relates to other sites on the web.
