The sciatic nerve runs along the back of your leg. When you have sciatica, that nerve is impinged somewhere and causes extreme pain. Muscle spasms are something totally different. They can be caused by overuse, low calcium, low potassium, low electrolytes and other deficiencies and imbalances. They can also be caused by Fibromyalgia, so if it persists over time, you might need to consider that diagnosis as well.
Low potassium can cause muscle spasms.
