  • Any kind of chemical treatment on your hair can (and probably will) damage it, but you should be able to manage it. Since your hair is not currently color treated, you should be able to minimize the amount of damage done to your hair. You can probably do it without any lasting ill-effect on your hair. For something like this, you'll want to go to a good salon, not just a corner discount family cut-shop. The best thing you can do is to find a reputable, knowledgeable beautician. Make sure he or she is licensed. Talk with your stylist. Explain to him or her what results you are hoping to acheive, and ask him or her to explain your various options. There are a variety of perms available, with varying levels of strength and different properties. A good salon should stock different types of perms, and your stylist should be able to recommend a product that will be strong enough to straighten your hair, but gentle enough not to fry it. He or she should also be able to recommend and provide you with styling products (such as a leave-in conditioner) that will treat your hair after the perm and keep it from being too damaged. A trusted stylist is your most important resource! Good luck!
