The ring that Bilbo Baggins found and passed on to Frodo made the wearer invisible when it was worn. Wearing it became addictive and continued use made the wearer progressively more ill to the point of death.

It was only one of the original set of rings that Sauron was trying to get into his possession so that he would obtain absolute power.

The One ring was designed by Sauron to control the other rings created by the Elves.
The Nine rings given to humans turned them into the Nazgul.
The Seven given to the Dwarves were used for mining, and presumed lost when the Balrog was unearthed.
Of the three for Elves, the ring of fire was wielded by Gandalf, the ring of Air by Elrond, and the ring of Water by Galadriel. Between the three of them, they controlled the elements.

The one ring was designed to give power not just over the elements, but people as well. If Sauron had found the ring, nobody would have been able to stand against him, much less defeat him. The ring had powers of its own, in that it corrupted whoever wore it and gave its wearer invisibility.

It was supposed to answer the question of who the chosen one was by deciding on the blue pill or the red pill. However, most were confused because the rings answer was 42.

Read the book or at least watch the movie.

In short, it is a NASCAR-themed comedy-drama. The Ring is how they refer to the racetrack throughout the story.
