  • It depends on the toothpaste. Some tooth pastes have additives to whiten teeth or others for sensitive teeth some have hydrogen peroxide. In these cases' and others, swallowing can be harmful. Most toothpastes have fluoride added which is good in one's diet in small quantities (such as in water supply) but constantly swallowed in levels that are in tooth pastes can have harmful effects (including increased tooth deterioration). Children’s tooth pastes often have lower levels of fluoride or other potentially harmful substances and therefore are not as much of a concern when swallowed. Overall, probably better to not eat your toothpaste, but a "pea-sized" amount swallowed every now and then shouldn’t cost you any shut eye.
  • There definitely are some harmful chemicals in most toothpastes. I will give details later. Ha!! Ha!! Bob has got some weird mental stuff going on...he keeps trying to downgrade my answers. The following information is very true and has plenty of documented scientific research to back it up...you can do a search and find out for yourself. It is funny that some of the funded research was cut short by the vested corporate interests once detrimental discoveries were made. And nobel prize winning scientists on cancer...Bob!!...they are not scientific? Read about cancer. Angela B is correct. Floride is extremely tough on the body and most people are currently exposed to toxic levels. I will give more information about Floride later. And again, I want to stress...you can find out for yourself from your own direct observations. Most toothpastes have an assortment of chemicals which are not healthy to digest nor even place in your mouth. Remember that many substances are directly absorbed in the mouth or even on the skin. You, yourself, can research and investigate and directly observe to find out what is true for you. A main point that I always try to make is that biological systems are not made for processing artificial chemicals...it throws out the natural healthy balance of a biological system. Many companies and their financed research would have you believe otherwise. You will find related information correlating with the chemicals in toothpaste by clicking on my name. You will also see many of my answers which promote a more natural approach being attacked via vested corporate-referenced interests. So, you decide if it is healthy or unhealthy. Here is just one example. SLS or Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is a common ingredient found in cosmetics and soaps and toothpaste and shaving cream. It is a surfactant and helps foaming actions. However, it is used as an industrial grade degreaser and detergent, like cleaning oil off garage floors. It adversely affects the eyes, and attacks proteins in the eyes. Ever wonder why you see some dogs start to go blind early? This substance readily penetrates the skin and builds up in a variety of organs such as the liver, heart, lungs, brain. It is a mutagen and can change genetic material found in cells. In toothpaste, it does not rinse out properly and even after 8 rinses residues are found which can lead to mouth ulcers and gum afflictions. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate reacts with other chemicals and compounds the harm to the body. It even is used intentionally by labs to cause skin irritations. And this substance is common in many soaps. Triclosan is a chemical that's been used since the 1960s because of its antibacterial properties. It's an active ingredient in many household products: Detergents, Dishwashing liquids, Soaps, Deodorants, Cosmetics, Lotions, Anti-microbial creams, Toothpastes, Body washes. It's also added to plastics, polymers and textiles to give them antibacterial properties. A little-known fact about triclosan: When this chemical comes in contact with your skin, it stays there for many hours. It doesn't rinse off. Triclosan is a type of chlorophenol. Chemicals containing chlorophenol are known as powerful pesticides, which means they are very good at killing things like insects and small rodents. That's why triclosan is added to antibacterial soap, detergents and other products: To kill any bacteria they come in contact with. Unfortunately, common sense tells you, when you add chemicals designed to kill things to consumer products, you are going to have trouble. And in fact, many consumers complain about skin rashes and other irritations when using products containing chlorophenols. Chlorophenols are linked to cancers too. It's also believed small amounts of dioxins and dibenzofurans (very toxic substances) can be created when triclosan is manufactured. If these harmful substances are created, they are also added along with triclosan to all those consumer products I listed earlier. In fact, triclosan has also been found in mother's breast milk, likely the result of extensive exposure to products containing it. A study by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University showed that washing dishes by hand and using an antibacterial dishwashing liquid soap, has unintended consequences. Specifically, the chemical triclosan contained in the soap was found to interact with chlorinated water to produce significant amounts of chloroform. Chloroform is part of a family of four disinfection byproducts known as Trihalomethanes (TTHMs). When water companies add chlorine to water -- to kill or prevent bacteria from growing in it -- TTHMs interact with organic matter in their distribution system to cause disinfection byproducts. Typically, TTHMs enter your body thru inhalation. So if you are washing dishes by hand, you are naturally inhaling water vapors that carry TTHMs. This study found the amount of chloroform in water increased significantly when it came in contact with antibacterial soap containing Triclosan. You can extend this study's data to apply to toothpaste. Avoid soaps, toothpaste, etc. with man-made additives, such as triclosan, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, DEA (diethanolomine), Isopropyl Alcohol, artificial fragrances, FD&C Colors (colors approved for food, drugs and cosmetics) and Propylene Glycol. Floride. Often Dentists and companies promote "stannous floride" as a solution for sensitive teeth. Like so very many toxins and "medicinal" drugs you will notice a feeling of irritation or becoming easily agitated or becoming more cynical when exposed to stannous floride. You can test this for yourself. Try some and take notes. You can also notice symptoms like this in others (although the behavior may not be overtly expressed, but the feelings and attitudes and thoughts are there). I should mention this: Toxins tend to accumulate in the body's fat tissues. Here is an article's excerpts from www.dirtdoctor.com written by Mary Sparrowdancer titled "Floride and Aggression" . "The United States is in the wake of yet another horrific school shooting - another shooting carried out by another boy reportedly taking a fluorinated pharmaceutical, Prozac. Another fluorinated drug, Luvox, was reportedly taken by one of the shooters in the Columbine tragedy. Similarly, there have been reports from US troops that bizarre, psychotic, aggressive behavior has been observed in individuals after taking Lariam, which is a fluorinated antimalarial. According to a January 2004 article in the Archives of Internal Medicine, cholesterol-lowering statins have now also been linked to aggressive, violent behavior. Lescol, Lipitor, "Baycol and Crestor are all fluorinated. Baycol was removed from the market, following at least 31 known deaths from adverse symptoms. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) " Quite the opposite from America's ongoing lack of awareness pertaining to fluorides, fluoride toxicity has been well-known, studied and well-documented in other countries for almost a century. "Andreas Schuld, who is the founder of Parents of Fluoride Poisoned Children headquartered in Canada, is considered by many at this time to be among the world's leading experts on fluorides. He states, "IG Farben chemists discovered that fluorides were potent anti-thyroid substances back in the 1930s." (6) "Following this discovery in Germany, thousands of patients in one clinic alone had their thyroid activity decreased through the administration of minute doses of fluoride compounds. One proven, effective method of administering this anti-thyroid medical treatment was by having the patients bathe in water dosed with minute amounts of fluoride compounds. (6) ...." There is more to the article. This data along with other information also relates to how many of the drug companies and how the psychiatrict industry really do hurt a lot of people. See some of my other posts.
  • It can be.
  • Why do you think there is a warning label on toothpaste? The main ingredient in toothpaste that requires the warning label is fluoride. Fluoride is very dangerous to the body and teeth. There is no warning label on toothpaste that does not have fluoride but has most or all of the ingredients found in fluoride toothpaste. If you doubt what I have said Google "fluoride" and learn.
  • not that i know of
