In order to get a save, a pitcher must enter the game when his team is leading. If he enters the game in the ninth inning, the lead can be no larger than three runs.
He can also enter the game at anytime with the potential tying run either on base, at the plate, or on deck. He of course must finish the game with his team still ahead. He can not be the winning pitcher. He can also get a save by pitching at least three effective innings.

Come in when your team is leading and win the game and finish it.
