    Type 18/8, also known as type 304 stainless steel, differs in chemical composition from type 316L stainless steel. Type 316L contains less carbon (0.035 percent versus 0.08 percent), less silicon (0.030 percent versus 0.75 percent) and more molybdenum (2 to 3 percent versus 0 percent).

    the main difference is the content of molybdenum that gives higher corrosion resistance to the SS 316L in particular in fluid containing chlorides like seawater and prevent "pitting corrosion" a localized form of corrosion
