    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Challah as we know it originated in Southern Germany and Austria during the Middle Ages. It became the traditional bread of the Jewish sabbath and quickly became popular in Eastern Europe as well. The word "challah" also applies to a piece of bread burned in sacrifice, a Jewish tradition 2,000 years old.
