    I wouldn't word it quite that way but I basically agree with you. I've known some very knowledgeable people who weren't very intelligent and some very intelligent people who weren't very smart or successful. I do think encouragement is very important to self confidence and success in many things.

    Good question. I wasn't encouraged as a child yet I've always loved learning and have done well academically. My parents did the opposite of encouragement, namely they asked me to hide awards obtained from achievements in mathematics and computer programming so that my brother won't feel jealous (twisted, sexist household). It never stopped my need for cognition.

    Based on personal experience, I believe learning and knowledge is a result of genetics and environmental experiences. I had to often think of creative ways to avoid bullying, abuse, and often spent time alone in my room studying, as this was an outlet of peace for me.
