The family circle is a concept that involves all family members being welcome, loved and cared for. The idea of the family as a circle provokes an image of unity, stability and continuity of affection. According to The Bowen Center of Washington D.C., psychiatrist Murray Bowen first developed a family circle like theory about family connectivity. It was known as the Bowen Theory. The Bowen Theory suggests that a unified, well-functioning family is capable of loving all members, regardless of circumstances or differences. However, when family members have difficulty relating, they often bring in other family members to choose sides, hence challenging the continuity of family relationships. In the Bowen Theory, family relationships are most stable and best maintained when members are cohesive. However, even when these relationships are not life-giving, members remain as part of the family circle that affects all other relationships in life. In a family circle that is functioning well, members are able to support each other through a variety of means. Family members come to know they will receive emotional comfort, their financial needs will be met in their youth, and they will not be harmed by loved ones. The family circle remains in the forefront throughout the life-cycle, whether supportive or not. Family circle members also have reason to expect that their needs will be met physically, emotionally and mentally by the other members. The concept of nurturing is vitally important as basic needs must be met in childhood to prevent emotional and social problems later in life.Family unity
