  • No. Parson Mason Weems, an early biographer of George Washington, invented the story. Ironically, Weems made up the story of a young George Washington who says to his father, "I cannot tell a lie," to illustrate Washington's honesty. This is, perhaps, the most enduring story about George Washington, but it is, in fact, a myth. Parson Weems is chiefly known for The Life and Memorable Actions of George Washington (c.1800), in the fifth edition of which appears the famous cherry-tree story. http://www.coe.ilstu.edu/jabraun/fall02/ci258.02/public/webpages/dolgin/teacher_resource.htm http://www.answers.com/topic/parson-weems
