    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Medical sources indicate a wide range of ailments that could be responsible for burning on top of the foot or calf pain. The many conditions could be responsible for only one symptom or both.

Foot and Leg Pain--Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

According to the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which results from injury to muscles or nerves, causes pain and a burning sensation. This condition affects hands, arms, legs or feet.

    Burning Foot Pain from Erythromelalgia-

The MerckSource explains that Erythromelalgia--spasms of dilation of small blood vessels--may result from the effects of high blood pressure or diabetes among other causes. The spasms cause burning pain in the feet or hands lasting from minutes to hours.

Deep Vein Thrombosis and Calf Pain

According to the Mayo Clinic, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) results from the formation of a blood clot in a vein deep within the body, most commonly causing pain in the calf of the leg, but sometimes also affecting the ankle or foot.

    Sciatica

Sciatica pain originates in the lower spinal area and radiates downward, usually along the back of the buttocks and legs, especially the thigh and calf. The Mayo Clinic reports that pain usually affects only one leg. It may cause a prickly sensation in the foot.

    Peripheral Artery Disease

According to MedlinePlus of the National Institutes of Health, when arteries in human limbs become narrowed or clogged pain or cramping occurs in the arms or legs, most commonly in the calf of the leg.

    Peripheral Neuropathy

The Mayo Clinic explains that peripheral neuropathy results when poorly controlled diabetes allows excessive glucose levels to build up in the blood. The high glucose harms the body's nerve fibers--especially those in the legs and feet--causing pain, especially while walking, and a burning feeling in the legs, feet or toes.

    Hi,

I am a physical therapist. Buring sensations frequently are caused by nerve conditions. It could be from a local nerve being pinched but is commonly associated with a nerve root irritation originating from the lumbar spine. The specific nerve that is gives sensation to the top of the foot is the L4 and sometimes L5 nerve root.

If these symptoms continue seek help from a doctor, specifically an orthopedic doctor.
