According to Lawrence Cunningham, a theology professor with Notre Dame, the symbolism of the blood of martyrdom, a concept key to the Catholic Church, is one possible explanation for Pope Benedict's unusual shoe color.
The Pope's red shoes could also represent fire, said Cunningham. The color is often worn during Pentecost as a reminder of the tongues of fire from the Acts of the Apostles.
Pope have often chosen red shoes in the past though Pope John Paul II, Benedict's predecessor did not. The previous pope preferred brown shoes
Another reason Benedict may have selected red for his footwear, may just be because he is used to the color. During his days as a cardinal, Pope Benedict wore the traditional cardinal color of red.
This pope has been known to favor tall mitres and more elaborate wardrobe choices when presiding over ceremonies such as mass, in what could be seen as a nod to popes from hundreds of years ago.
