  • It's common in most Asian countries. It's definately common in Vietnam. Their pyjamas are basically satin shirts with matching satin pants or t-shirs and shorts. Whether or not they change out of their pyjamas and into fresh, clean pyjamas to go out is beyond me. Because the 'shops' in Vietnam are basically street markets just outside your front door, getting dressed into proper clothes isn't really a big deal if you're just popping out to buy food.
  • To answer this question, it is necessary to understand what pajamas are. Pajamas is the USAmerican spelling of pyjamas, which derives from Urdu and Persian words meaning 'clothing with legs'. The Oxford Dictionary (Concise, ninth edition) definition #2 for pyjamas is 'loose trousers tied round the waist, worn by both sexes in some Asian countries'. The fact that in the USA, the word is used to describe sleepwear does not mean that the clothing item is used as sleepwear all over the world. Any clothing item that fits the description could be called pyjamas; it is a very common style of clothing in Asia. Therefore, it would be common in any city where folks wear loose trousers with matching shirts. Even sweatpants with a matching sweatshirt could be considered pyjamas/pajamas; so any USAmerican city would fit the bill.
  • Apparently, it's pretty popular in some areas of China (especially Shanghai), as can be seen here http://www.flickr.com/photos/zenzenok/14102811/ http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2002/09/11/MNpajamas.DTL In my experience in Malaysia and Singapore, you wouldn't so much as elicit a blink from other people if you went out for breakfast or a midnight snack in pajamas down the street. This could be due to a certain lack of need to always be so formal in many Asian countries.
  • Well, in North Africa much of the female population wear pyjamas under their djellaba. In fact many women wear nothing BUT pyjamas, and yes they are referred to as "pyjama" there. PJ's are worn inside the home and when one needs to go out for shopping or what have you the djellaba is thrown over the PJs and you go outside.
