Synaesthesia (US spelling is synesthesia) is a sensation experienced in a part of the body other than the part stimulated.

Synesthesia is when a person experiences a difference sense than the one being stimulated. For example, they may see colors when they hear sounds. From what I've read it's most common for people with this condition to see plain written letters in color. The best way to understand it is to read the descriptions written by people with synesthesia. There are many good quotations at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synaesthesia One of them is: "I often associate letters and numbers with colors. Every digit and every letter has a color associated with it in my head. Sometimes, when letters are written boldly on a piece of paper, they will briefly appear to be that color if I'm not focusing on it. Some examples: "S" is red, "H" is orange, "C" is yellow, ..." There is also a somewhat interactive demo (along with additional first-hand accounts of what synesthesia is like) at: http://web.mit.edu/synesthesia/www/colordemo.html
