Help answer this question below.
Become expert at sewing, illustration and pattern construction. As a teenager you can do this through trial and error, by taking evening adult education or community college classes, or by checking out technical skills books from the library.
Learn from the best. Gather ideas from designers who have made it. You can read about the greats such as Betsey Johnson and Ralph Lauren on the web. Many include their bio on their official website. Fashion merchandising courses on-line are another way to learn the business while still in high school.
What's stopping you? Get inspired. Put pencil to paper and sketch your vision. Buy fabric. Create a pattern or drape your creation. Sew. Voila! Create three to five interchangeable pieces and you have your first collection.
Formal education will be the next step. While in high school, you have Career Fairs and the school Career Center, take advantage of them. Check also with your Guidance Counselor to find fashion design programs and colleges.
On your path to becoming a designer you may eventually opt-out for another career. Fashion illustration, pattern making, tailoring, fashion production and marketing are all possibilities.
